WHAT MAKES A GOOD ESSAY?
The critical ingredient of any essay is a strong thesis statement. This drives the argument, structure and conclusions reached. Preparatory work (research, filtering, organizing) is critical to the success of the thesis.
An arresting opening is essential. Normally this culminates in the clear and concise thesis statement. Thereafter the essay develops along a logical and well organised argument, each paragraph containing a main idea supported by evidence and examples.
Secondary references are used sparingly and are clearly and appropriately referenced. Quotations should be pithy, relevant and appropriately cited. Accessibility for the reader is essential so the chosen register must suit the audience.
The conclusion should link back to the thesis statement and link all thematic threads.
Ultimately, the essay must engage the reader, perhaps challenge and sow seeds for further thought. The reader should come away knowing and understanding something more than when they began.
